I figured I might as well keep rolling with the DC Comics theme for today as well. Another fantastic piece of work form Nick Cardy, too! The more you look at this man’s body of work, the more you’ll certainly appreciate the loss the industry suffered when he passed away. Other creators in this book include- Gardner Fox, Carmine Infantino (RIP), and John Broome! This book is packed full of stories involving the fastest man alive! Enjoy!
Admittedly, I’m not the biggest fan of Superman in the comics. I do love the first two Donner movies, and also the animated series from the 90’s, but the comics just always fell flat for me. Not that I’ve read a ton or anything, but it just doesn’t resonate with me personally. That being said, check out this awesome cover by the late, great, Nick Cardy! My DC books are quite few in numbers (being a Marvel zombie for almost 20 years), but I’ve managed to acquire a couple of their books that are absolutely fascinating. This gem being one of them. Jim Aparo is one of those artists that make me immediately think of Batman when I see or hear his name (Garcia-Lopez, too). He’s the cover artist on this beauty, but the inside brings the talents of Joe Kubert, Bob Haney, Frank Springer, and more! Enjoy!
Lets be honest for a moment…who doesn’t love Jazzy John Romita?!? Of course, that was rhetorical! Just look at this offering from 1969. The credits on the interiors are just as impressive too! Stan Lee, John Buscema, John Verpoorten, Denny O’Neil, Tom Sutton, Gary Friedrich, Don Heck, and Frank Giacoia! I chose this one for not only the awesome Romita cover, but also because it’s Big John Buscema’s birthday today, too! Enjoy!
You know, I’m a huge fan of the Tomb of Dracula series, mostly because of Gene Colan and Marv Wolfman, but anything with Dracula is worth reading in my opinion! Check out this great cover by Gil Kane! This story was exceptional, and I look forward to talking about the entire series, plus great books like this Giant Size offering from David Kraft, Marv Wolfman, Don Heck, Frank Springer, Artie Simek, Petra Goldberg, and Len Wein! Today’s cover is one that initially appeared back in 1968 (Tales to Astonish #101), but in this reprint, it was in the mid 70’s. Story by Stan Lee, and pencils by Marie Severin! The inks by Frank Giacoia, and letters by Artie Simek. One story features the Hulk, as he travels across Bifrost (the rainbow bridge to Asgard), tossing Heimdall off in the process! A couple of years ago, I decided to dig deeper into the wondrous world of Jack Kirby. Being a Marvel zombie at the time, I thought I’d grab this series if I could find it in its entirety, and for a bargain. Well, I’m happy to say that for $38, I bought the full series (yes, even the Annual) for that low price! Most of the books are in good condition, and only a couple are a little worse for the wear, but still readable. This fantastic series takes a journey through ancient times, and gives the reader a glimpse at the future too! Written, drawn, and edited by the King (inks by John Verpoorten)!
You know, whenever you can grab some Jack Kirby/Dick Ayers awesomeness, you need to take advantage, because gems like this aren’t stacked by the dozen everywhere. I just bought this book today at a local convention (Lehigh Valley Comic Con) for fifty cents! That’s right, half a buck for one of the best artists of all time! This is one of the fabulous reprint titles that are starting to creep up in price, so I grabbed it quick! Enjoy!

A reprint of Avengers #56 (1968), this book is a fantastic look at Captain America, as he and four other Avengers (Black Panther, Wasp, Giant Man, & Hawkeye) travel back in time using Dr. Doom’s time platform. They go back to try and determine if Bucky really died on that fateful day back in WWII at the hands of Baron Zemo! This gem was brought to us by Roy Thomas and Big John Buscema! One must wonder if Ed Brubaker used this story as a springboard for his “Winter Soldier” story. Hmmm… Enjoy!
