Does anything scream 1970’s more than Marvel Horror? Probably not, and that’s why I chose this wild cover for today! Meet the sister of Damon Hellstrom, Satana! In this issue, we see Satana, as she walks the mortal plane, in search of…who knows what? Anyway, she kills some people, fights off a demon, and looks rather sexy doing it, I might add. Written by Chris Claremont, pencils & inks by The Tribe, Marcos on letters, and Cohen on colors (Marv Wolfman-editor). Cover by Gil Kane! Enjoy!

In honor of my son’s birthday, today brings a double-dose of comic book action! I let him pick out the book I’d post for today’s second installment, and he blind picked this gem! Written by Steve Englehart, Pencils by Gene “The Dean” Colan, inks & color by Tom Palmer, letters by John Costanza, and edited by Marv Wolfman! This tale brings Clea back to her mentor and lover, a strange man at the door that attempts suicide, and the minions of Hades itself! Cover by Colan, Palmer, and Crespi! Enjoy!

Tales of Suspense #92, 1967. “Before My Eyes…Nick Fury Died”

Alright, so, the tag line of this book might be slightly misleading, but it certainly doesn’t diminish the pure awesomeness of the issue! The first story (Stan Lee & the late, great, Gene Colan) is a Vietnam story with ‘ol Shellhead. The second story features Captain America (by Stan Lee & Jack ‘King’ Kirby), as he and Nick Fury battle it out with A.I.M.! Cover by Jack ‘King’ Kirby & Frank Giacoia! Enjoy!

Thor #262, 1977. “Even An Immortal Can Die”

You’ll soon come to realize that Thor is one of my all time favorite characters. When I had the chance to buy this book, and get the writer/editor, Len Wein to sign it for me (at C2E2 2013), I was ecstatic. The interior pencils are by the incomparable, Walt Simonson (with inks by the late Tony DeZuniga, colors by Glynis Wein, letters by Joe Rosen), and really show his great skills with a pencil from early in his career. As if that wasn’t enough, you get a cover by ‘Big’ John Buscema, Joe Sinnott, and John Costanza! Enjoy!

Strange Tales #176, 1974. “The Golem”

I love this tagline…”The thing that walks like a man”! Created by Len Wein and Big John Buscema, this character (Golem) didn’t stick around too long, but was pretty cool when he was present in the Marvel U. His stories had a mummy feel to them, for sure. Credits include- Mike Friedrich (script), Tony DeZuniga (art), and cover by John Romita Sr.! Enjoy!

Dr. Strange #183, 1969. “Beware The Undying Ones”

On the very first page of this book, we get to see a quote from H.P. Lovecraft, and also, some spectacular work from Gene Colan there and throughout the entire book. Back in the late 1960’s, Colan and Thomas had something very special brewing together with this title, and that would lead to a regular series that lasted for over eighty issues, starring Dr. Strange! Check out this final issue of that amazing series (Thomas & Colan) from those two great creators! Cover by Gene Colan and Bill Everett! Enjoy!

The Defenders #34, 1976. “He’s Back! Nebulon, The Celestial Man”

Being a huge fan of Dr. Strange, this title is obviously on my radar. The issues written by the eccentric Steve Gerber, were crazy, but so good. In this particular issue, a powerful enemy, Nebulon, has returned, and it’s up to the Doc, Hulk, and Valkyrie to take him down! Written by Steve Gerber, art by Sal Buscema & Jim Mooney, and letters by Irv Watanabe, and colors by Irene Vartanoff! And what an awesome cover by Rich Buckler & Dan Adkins! Enjoy!

The Avengers #185, 1979. “The Yesterday Quest”

I don’t know if it’s possible to imagine a better comic book. Mark Gruenwald & Steven Grant (plot), David Michelinie (script), John Byrne (pencils), Dan Green (inks), Costanza (letters), and Slifer (colors). Oh, and did I forget to mention George Perez and Terry Austin on the cover? The story is one of my all time favorite Avengers stories. It digs into the past of Wanda & Pietro Maximoff (Scarlet Witch & Quicksilver), and also showcases Modred, Ch’Thon, and the High Evolutionary! Enjoy!

Kamandi, The Last Boy on Earth #19 & 20, 1974

OK, so I sort of lied. Those last two books weren’t the final books from DC in this era. I did remember that I picked up these two great issues of Kamandi, at New York Comic Con (2013). Any time you can get Jack Kirby for fifty cents, you’d be a fool not to grab it! The main character in this book is a dead ringer for Ikaris, of the Eternals, and that’s just another reason why I’ll buy this series whenever I happen upon an issue! Written, drawn, and edited by Jack Kirby (inked & lettered by D. Bruce Berry)!

Today brings a double-shot of DC! Why, you ask? Well, because they’re the only two DC books left that I own from the Bronze and Silver Ages, that’s why! The Wonder Woman book features a duel with Hephaestus! Cover by Ernie Chan & Vince Colletta! Interiors by Martin Pasko (writer), and José Delbo (art)! The next book is one of my favorite covers, just because of the nonsensical “oath”, that Supes is forced to recite! Cover by George Klein & Curt Swan. Interiors by Jim Shooter (writer) and Al Plastino (art). Enjoy!
